Your Chester Spa – Skincare Education Series – Exfoliants

Discover how exfoliants work, their benefits for skin texture and tone, and how to use them safely. Dr Catherine Harris shares a medically informed approach to exfoliation to protect your skin barrier and support healthy skin.

Understanding Exfoliants in Skincare

At Your Chester Spa, we believe healthy skin starts with understanding how the skin functions and how to support it correctly.

Exfoliation can be an effective part of a skincare routine, helping to improve skin texture, brightness and overall skin health when used appropriately. However, it is important to understand that exfoliants are not suitable for everyone in the same way, and overuse can often do more harm than good.

What Are Exfoliants?

Exfoliants are products or treatments designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.

As skin naturally renews itself, dead skin cells can build up on the surface over time. This may contribute to dullness, congestion, uneven texture and breakouts.

Exfoliation helps to support the skin’s natural renewal process by removing this excess build-up.

The Different Types Of Exfoliants

There are two types of exfoliants:

Physical Exfoliants

Physical exfoliants manually remove dead skin cells using particles, grains or textured tools.

Examples may include scrubs, cleansing brushes or polishing treatments.

While some physical exfoliants can be suitable for certain skin types, overly harsh or abrasive products may lead to irritation and damage to the skin barrier.

Chemical Exfoliants

Chemical exfoliants use active ingredients to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed more evenly.

Common examples include:

  • AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as glycolic acid and lactic acid
  • BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) such as salicylic acid
  • PHAs (Polyhydroxy Acids), which are often gentler for sensitive skin

Different acids work in different ways, which is why selecting the correct exfoliant for your skin is important.

What Are The Benefits Of Exfoliation?

When used correctly, exfoliants may help to improve:

  • Dull or uneven skin texture
  • Congested pores and breakouts
  • Excess oil
  • Mild pigmentation and post-blemish marks
  • Overall skin radiance
  • The absorption and effectiveness of other skincare products

Many people also find that their skin appears smoother and more balanced with appropriate exfoliation.

Can Exfoliation Damage The Skin?

Yes, but only when exfoliants are overused or unsuitable for the skin type.

Over-exfoliation is one of the most common causes of a weakened skin barrier and may lead to:

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Dryness or tightness
  • Sensitivity or stinging
  • Flaking
  • Increased reactivity
  • Breakouts or irritation

Using multiple active products together, exfoliating too frequently or choosing products that are too strong can all contribute to skin barrier disruption.

Not Every Skin Type Needs The Same Approach

Exfoliation should always be tailored to the individual.

Those with conditions such as Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis and sensitive or reactive skin may require a more cautious approach, and in some cases, certain exfoliants may not be appropriate at all.

The right product, strength and frequency should always be chosen based on your skin’s condition and tolerance.

Why Professional Guidance Matters

Many people assume stronger products or more frequent exfoliation will produce better results, but this is rarely the case.

A medically informed approach helps ensure exfoliation supports the skin rather than damaging it.

At Your Chester Spa, Dr Catherine Harris, MBChB, FRCGP takes a personalised approach to skincare, helping clients understand which ingredients and routines are most appropriate for their individual skin concerns.

A Balanced Approach To Healthy Skin

Exfoliation should support the skin, not overwhelm it.

When used correctly, exfoliants can help improve skin clarity, texture and overall skin health. The key is choosing the right approach for your skin and maintaining a healthy, balanced routine.
